The much-awaited Thailand Yacht Show (TYS) is now in full gear at the prestigious Ocean Marina in Pattaya, Thailand. The Show, regarded as Asia’s premier boating showcase and now in its 6th edition, has been a nautical calendar fixture for many years, and the excitement has stemmed from the fact that it had to be shelved for over 2 years due to the Covid pandemic.
Seen at the Opening Ceremony along with Mr. Andy Treadwell, CEO of Verventia Co., Ltd., the Show’s organizer, were H.E. Mr. Mohamed Jinah of The Maldives Embassy, Dato Steve Cheah, Diplomatic Council Head of Mission for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, Ms. Wiparat Tharateerapab, Director of Strategy & Planning Division of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports, Sub. Lt. Pramote Tubtim, Pattaya City Manager and Acting Mayor of Pattaya City, Mr. Songwut Apirakkhit, Executive Director, Investment Management Division of the Eastern Economic Corridor Office in Thailand (EEC), Mr. Pierre Jaffre, Advisor to the EEC, Mr. Pairat Sukngam, Assistant Director of the Pattaya Office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), to name but a few of the distinguished guests.
“We are delighted to be staging Asia’s first boat show in nearly 3 years even though it is a much smaller show than we are accustomed to organizing. But this is because it is such a buoyant boating market at the moment – several of our longtime supporters have already found themselves with no boats left to sell. Nearly all the major yacht builders in Europe have to ramp up their production as their distributors have sold out and are now taking orders for delivery in the middle of next year and beyond. Even the ever-popular MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona last month had less than 20 yachts on display when they usually have around 100 major superyachts at the show”, revealed Mr. Treadwell. The global yacht charter market was valued at US$10.91 billion in 2020, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.6 percent from 2020 to 2028.
“In this respect, we would like to sincerely welcome FLS Yachting Worldwide, a fast-developing international marine transport and logistics company based in Asia, to our Show as our new Official Yacht Transport Partner, joining our Official Insurer, AXA Thailand General Insurance, to further support our campaign to grow yachting and yacht tourism in Thailand and Asia”, added Mr. Treadwell..

As part of Verventia’s engagement by the Saudi government to help oversee the development and promotion of yacht tourism resorts, marinas and international events on their Red Sea shores – which stretch for over 1,000 magnificent miles – a special ‘Preview edition’ of a new Jeddah Yacht Show was staged for local dealers and associated on-water lifestyle businesses during the Jeddah Season festival last month, at the brand-new Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina (see www.jeddahyachtshow.com).
A one-day ‘Saudi-Thai Investment Forum’ was held in Riyadh to coincide with the last day of the show. The forum was attended by a delegation of over 100 executives from various Thai government departments, led by Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Dr Don Pramudwinai and accompanied by major private sector corporate representatives. This was all part of the recently renewed Saud-Thai diplomatic relations and was a highly successful event, opening up many routes for collaboration and co-investment opportunities to the mutual benefit of both Kingdoms.
Verventia has been working on just such a collaboration since September last year because of the obvious synergies in our “Spice Route” superyacht tourism project. Thailand’s objective is to get a fleet of foreign-flagged superyachts coming to cruise its waters for future (European) winter seasons, and in order to get here, they have to sail down the Red Sea – so a stop-off in Jeddah to do some local cruising (and refuel at local rates!) on the way down is an obvious opportunity to work together.
The Thai delegation visited Al Ula and other major historical sites which all add to the panoply of magnificent Saudi tourist attractions, for overseas and locals alike. They ended the trip in Jeddah where they were invited to visit the new Marina and Yacht Club and departed back to Thailand extremely enthusiastic about the opportunities which now lie ahead.
With just two days to go until the opening of the Thailand Yacht Show Pattaya 2022 (TYS), Asia’s first boat show in over two and a half years since the start of the pandemic, the boating market is extremely buoyant, to say the least…! So buoyant, in fact, that factories back in Europe and the USA cannot keep up with the demand, and compounding the problem has been a shortage of capacity with yacht transport to bring deliveries to Asia. Many brands and dealers are taking orders now for deliveries in the middle of next year and beyond.
It’s against this positive backdrop of opportunity that FLS Yachting Worldwide, a fast-developing international marine transport and logistics company based in Asia, have decided to enter the yacht transport market, and have come on board as the Official Yacht Transport Partner of TYS and show organiser Verventia’s campaign to grow yachting and yacht tourism in Thailand and Asia.
Verventia CEO, Andy Treadwell, is delighted: “There couldn’t be a better time for FLS to enter the market, or a better way to announce their arrival on the scene and ensure they quickly take their place in this business. All our clients – all the brands, all the dealers and all the brokers in Asia – are unanimous in welcoming the extra capacity that FLS Yachting Worldwide will bring,” he said.
FLS CEO, Torbjörn Larisch, is equally as enthusiastic: “We’ve been looking at this new business sector for quite some time now, ever since we started sponsoring yachting through the Platu Championship of Thailand. We’re delighted with the prospect of supporting the global yachting industry and are confident that our new relationship with Verventia will provide an excellent springboard into this business over the next few years. We’re very much looking forward to meeting all the TYS and SYS exhibitors,” he said.
World-famous brands like Azimut, Sunseeker, Gulfcraft and Silent Yachts, who are long-term partners and supporters of TYS, unfortunately have limited stock available to show at TYS 2022, as a result of pandemic-induced global supply chain and transportation delays. These companies and many more will, nevertheless, be exhibiting and supporting the industry; buyers can still order a new boat despite the current shortfall – and in the meantime, there are plenty of their boats available to charter!
It was the same story at the long-standing MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona last month, which attracts leading charter brokers from all over the world. Traditionally around 100 major superyachts are present at this show; this year, however, there were less than 20 yachts on display. All the major brokers still came to visit the event and despite a significantly smaller display, the event was its usual great success. TYS is expected to follow suit with a smaller yacht footprint this year, but with a more positive than ever outlook towards the future.read more
